Guevara hits 1,000 point mark in 75-61 win over Brandywine

Hazleton, Pa. - It was Hazleton senior Stephanie Guevara's (New Brunswick, Nj.) night on Friday when the Lady Lions faced Penn State Brandywine. All eyes were on Guevara as she sat just one point shy of the career 1,000 point mark prior to the game. The senior made history in the first quarter, sinking a free throw to reach the plateau, then capped her banner evening with a double-double effort to lead her team to 75-61 win over Brandywine for sole possession of second place in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.

Hotham Nets 1,000th Point, Owls Victorious on the Road

BROOKLYN, NY – Senior Amanda Hotham (Fort Fairfield, ME) scored her 1,000th career point, helping boost the University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (5-14) to a 72-34 victory on the road over Pratt Institute on Friday.

The two teams would trade the lead in the first quarter, and the Cannoneers would have the advantage at the completion of the period.  Just over two minutes into the second period, the Owls' Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) would hit a three-point basket to give UMPI a lead they would not relinquish.  Pratt would close the gap to one point at the 6:49 mark with a layup, but would only score one more point in the rest of the quarter.  The home team's offensive woes helped the Owls build a lead, as they would finish the quarter on a 13-1 run and be up by a score of 30-17 at the end of the half.

UMPI would continue to stretch their lead in the second half, thanks to some stifling defense and strong shooting.  Hotham would score on a layup with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter, which would give her her 1,000th career point.  The Owls would enjoy a 21-point lead at the end of the third and cruise to a 38-point victory.  UMPI would shoot 40.6% from the floor in the contest and out rebound Pratt 60-33.  Pratt would struggle offensively, shooting 18.4% from the floor for the game.

Hotham would lead the Owls with 24 points and 13 rebounds.  Wright would also tally a double-double, scoring 11 and grabbing 12 rebounds.  Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) and Holli Boyce (SO, Stonington, ME) would add ten points apiece.  Pratt was led by Emily Guerra (FR, Babylon, NY), who would end the night with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Owls continue their road swing with a 1 PM game at Fisher College (9-13) on Saturday.
