JWU Women's Basketball to Host 2nd Annual Play4Kay Fundraiser Game

Charlotte, N.C. – Trudi Lacey, director of athletics, played for the legendary Kay Yow, head coach of the NC State Wolfpack women's basketball team. Johnson & Wales University-Charlotte Athletics is hosting the 2nd Annual Play4Kay Fundraiser Game on Friday, February 9 at 7 p.m. in the Wildcat Center.

The event is open to the public, and all in attendance are asked to wear pink in honor of the many women who have fought cancer.

Yow, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, coached for more than 35 years and courageously fought breast cancer for 22 years before her death in 2009. In 2007, she founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to support women's cancer research and bring awareness to the disease.

Each year, colleges and universities across the country participate in the National Play4Kay Week to raise awareness and funds in efforts to fight cancer. JWU is thrilled to be a part of this cause and to help raise funds in memory of Coach Yow.

In addition, Johnson & Wales Charlotte Athletics will invite anyone who is a cancer survivor, has been affected by cancer in any way, or has lost a loved one to join at half-time on the court and stand in solidarity against this dreaded disease.

Special t-shirts will be for sale and proceeds will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Cash or check donations will be accepted throughout the game.

Those who wish to donate electronically are encouraged to visit the team's fundraising page. Any amount is appreciated, and thank you for supporting JWU Women's Basketball and the Play4Kay game to fight cancer.

Prutsman Notches 1,000th Career Point

Penn State Hazleton junor point guard McKenzie Prutsman drove the lane for the second time in 20 seconds in the opening minutes of the game Sunday against Berekeley College.  The result was the same as the previous drive, with the ball kissing the glass and dropping through the bottom of the net.  Only this time instead of racing back to drop into her defensive spot on the floor, a huge smile overtook her face and the horn sounded to stop the game.  Prutsman had just scored the 1,000th point of her collegiate career at Penn State.  A junior from Jasper, NY Prutsman is the second fastest player in school history to reach the 1,000 the plateau and is the 6th Lady Lion in program history to hit the career 1,000 mark. A Rehabilitation and Human Services major, McKenzie is the daughter of Tonia and Eric Prutsman.
