SMWC Volleyball Volunteers to Train Wabash Valley Youth

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team was able to give back on Sunday afternoon as they volunteered with the COA elementary volleyball league at Terre Haute South High School.

Head Coach Steve Beeler co-founded the COA Volleyball Club 17 years ago, which made this a perfect opportunity for his new college team to give back and teach the youth here in Terre Haute, Ind.

There are around 100 girls from the Wabash Valley that are taking part in the league, and on Sunday they got a special visit from the SMWC volleyball team. SMWC players demonstrated drills and helped teach the players how to pass and serve. SMWC players also observed the teams scrimmaging and were able to offer assistance during live action.

"I thought that it was a great experience for the team," said sophomore Madeline Howes. "The younger girls seemed to be really excited and happy that we were all there, and our team was excited to be there as well. It was fun to be back at the exact same clinic where I started playing volleyball."

Howes isn't the only SMWC volleyball player with a connection to COA. Juniors Jessica Coombs and Brylie Riddell, as well as freshman McKenzi Kumpfhave all been affiliated with the club in the past.

The Pomeroys are 5-4 in their inaugural season and will be back in Hamilton Arena on September 29, when they face Franklin at 7:00 p.m.
