Golf National Championship Preview

Newport News, VA- Penn State Wilkes-Barre will be hosting the 2011 USCAA Golf National Championships.  The Championship week opens Sunday, October 9th and will go through the 11th.  The event will be held at the Penn State University Blue Course.  The USCAA is expecting a large field with more than twenty schools represented.

On Sunday teams will be allowed a practice round for players to get a feel for the course before play begins. Teams that wish to play a practice round must contact Steve Eskey at seskey1@psu.edu to schedule a time. The opening round of the tournament will kickoff Monday at 8:00 am, with the final round on Tuesday.  Afterwards the winning team and top performers will be honored at the awards ceremony.

The Penn State Blue Course has gone through some recent renovations, which expanded it from 6,500 yards to a more challenging 7,228 yards in its first restyling since 1994. Of all the holes on the championship course, the 7th and 8th holes underwent the most dramatic changes. The 7th hole has gone from a 190-yard Par 3 to a challenging 465-yard Par 4. The 8th hole was changed from a 360-yard Par 4 to an uphill 217-yard Par 3. Water hazards were added on holes 2, 3, 5, and 15 in further increase the overall difficulty.  These recent improvements will help make this year’s tournament as exciting as ever.

With one of the largest field of teams ever in the history of the USCAA Golf National Championship and a new and improved course it can be certain that this year’s Championship will be a very competitive and memorable event.
