LOUISVILLE, KY- After two days of competition Florida College, Southern Virginia University, Rochester College and Spalding University are still remaining.
Day one of the USCAA Volleyball National Championship started at 11am with four games. Spalding defeated Penn College in two sets. Elisa Burkman lead Spalding with 8 kills. Florida College beat Penn State Fayette in two with Jenny Moorer of Florida College leading the team with 19 assists. Southern Virginia topped Lindenwood-Belleville in two sets. Torri Tuttle led Southern Virginia with 4 blocks. Rochester College beat UC-Clermont in straight sets with Emily Rajter getting 9 digs.
The 12:30 Thursday games began with Penn State Mont Alto losing to Spalding in straight sets. Kirsten Snyder lead Spalding with 14 assists. Rochester College defeated Penn College two sets to none. Niki McKerracher led Rochester with 5 blocks. Southern Virginia beat Robert Morris-Springfield in two sets. Nicole Gwynn led the team with 27 assists.
Two games took place at 2:00pm beginning with UC Clermont edging out Penn State Mont Alto two sets to one. Kaitlyn Miller led the way for UC Clermont with 15 kills. Robert Morris-Springfield defeated Penn State Fayette in two sets. Brittany Winters had 24 assists for Robert Morris-Springfield.
The first round concluded with Florida College beating Southern Virginia in straight sets led by Kerri Taylor’s 11 kills. UC Clermont edged out Penn College in three sets. Rachel Hayes had 8 blocks for the Lady Cougars. Penn State Fayette defeated Lindenwood-Belleville in straight sets with Katie Sleasman having 18 assists. Spalding edged out Rochester College winning the third set by narrow margin of 15-11. Jessica Luker led Spalding with 14 digs.
The second day of the 2011 USCAA Volleyball National Championships started with Penn State Mont Alto beating Penn College in straight sets. Christine Walker led Mont Alto with 8 kills. Spalding came away with the win against UC Clermont in straight sets. Spalding’s Sarah Schott collected 8 assists for the Golden Eagles. Southern Virginia edged out Penn State Fayette in three sets led by Nicole Gwynn, who had 26 assists. Robert Morris-Springfield fell to Lindenwood Belleville in straight sets. Lindenwood was led by Emily Randazzo with 9 kills.
The 11:30 games began with Kerri Taylor contributing 9 kills to lead Florida College to a win against Robert Morris-Springfield in two sets. Rochester College beat Penn State Mont Alto in two sets thanks to a strong performance by Katelyn Cosio who had 7 digs and 8 assists. Due to a tiebreaker following pool play, there was a one set playoff between Lindenwood Belleville and Penn State Fayette to determine who would advance to the quarterfinals. Lindenwood Belleville edged out Fayette with a 26-24 win.
In quarterfinal play matches were increased to best of five sets. Florida College, the number one seed, defeated 10th seeded Penn State Mont Alto three games to none. Jenny Moorer of Florida College led in assists with 21. The 6th seed, Spalding University, beat the 7th seed Lindenwood-Belleville in four sets with Jessica Luker contributing 18 digs for the Golden Eagles. Rochester College, the 2nd seed, took down 9th seeded Robert Morris-Springfield in three straight sets. Katelyn Cosio and Emily Serrano led the way for the Lady Warriors with 5 kills each. The 5thseeded Southern Virginia topped the 4th seeded UC Clermont in three sets. Brynn McGinn led Southern Virginia with 10 kills. Semi-final play will begin tomorrow, featuring Florida College and Rochester College at 10 am. and Spalding University will take on Southern Virginia at 12 pm. EST.
