DUBOIS, PA. – The first United States Collegiate Athletic Association Wrestling Invitational was held at Penn State DuBois on February 4-5 with a tri-match on Friday followed by an invitational tournament on Saturday.
On Friday night, Penn College and The Apprentice School joined the host Penn State DuBois in a round-robin event. The host Nittany Lions opened the event facing Penn College and the bout went down to the heavyweights. Jim Mosher pinned Pat Dunkle in 38 seconds at heavyweight to help lead the hosts to a 28-25 dramatic win over Penn College. DuBois opened the dual winning the first three bouts with David Hommell scoring a major decision over Ed Turner at 133 pounds to help put them up 16-0.
Penn College responded winning six of the next seven bouts as Derek Anderson scored a 7-5 decision over Anthony Ferguson at 235 pounds to put the Wildcats ahead 25-22. Mosher responded with his win at heavyweight to give the hosts the dual match win.
Apprentice School took to the mat next to face Penn College and scored a 39-6 win. After losing the opening bout, the Builders scored wins in the final eight bouts to take the victory. Odis Wesby and BJ Compton won by decisions at 149 and 157 respectively to tie the match 6-all. Ricky Anderson followed with a win by fall in 1:09 at 165 pounds to put the Builders ahead 12-6.
In the finals against the host Penn State DuBois, the Builders scored a 33-15 victory. After losing the first two matches, the Builders won the next seven bouts to take the duals title. Anderson scored another win by fall at 165 pounds, this time in 37 seconds, to put the Builders up 12-9. Sophomore Kevin Gray closed out that streak with his second win by fall at 235 pounds on the night with a win in 4:33 to put the Builders up 33-9.
On Saturday, the invitational tournament took place as the three teams that wrestled on Friday night were joined by Penn State New Kensington and Southern Virginia University. Apprentice School won six of the weight classes, while Penn State DuBois had two champions and Southern Virginia University had the other. Area schools sent backups and red-shirts to help fill out some of the brackets.
