ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM AND ALL-AMERICAN RECIPIENTS
In semi-final match-ups, Spalding University defeated UC Clermont, while Florida College took down Southern Virginia University (SVU) in a close four set match.
In the consolation match, the UC Clermont Cougars were never able to find a rhythm, losing in straight sets to SVU. SVU was led by junior All-American Ali Krebs and freshman outside hitter Aubrey Muaina.
The Championship match between Florida College and Spalding University featured a back and forth battle that left fans on the edge of their seats for a five set classic. For the third consectutive year the two teams met in the finals, with Florida winning in 2007 and Spalding winning in 2008.
Spalding, who had yet to drop a set in the tournament, jumped out to an early lead taking the first set in front of an emotional home court crowd. Florida College was able to battle back taking the next two sets thanks to a strong performance from freshman outside hitter Kerri Taylor.
The fourth set looked as if Florida College was going to close out the match, but an emotional Allison Woosley willed her team back from the brink of defeat to force a fifth and final set.
In the final set, Kerri Taylor and the Florida College Falcons proved to be to much for the Spalding Eagles. Florida College took the final set and walked away with the 2009 USCAA National Championship.

After the conclusion of pool play, teams were then seeded into a championship bracket. Penn State Mont Alto and Penn State Fayette were both eliminated after going winless in their four pool play matches. The teams were seeded as follows:

The first two matches of tournament play featured #1 Spalding University vs. #4 Talladega College and #1 Florida College vs. #4 Ohio St. Marion. Both number one seeds won convincingly to move on to semi-final action tomorrow. Spalding eliminated Talladega 25-12, 25-15, 25-13, while Florida College defeated Ohio St. Marion 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.
The second set of matches featured two five set thrillers. #2 Rochester took on #3 UC Clermont while #2 Robert Morris University-Springfield faced #3 Southern Virginia. Robert Morris was able to jump out to an early two set lead on SVU. Led by junior All-American Ali Krebs, SVU mounted an emotional comeback. After being down two sets to none, Krebs rallied her team at center court and exchanged and emotional set of words with her fellow teammates. From that point on, SVU took control of the match downing Robert Morris-Springfield 21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 12-10.
On the other court, UC Clermont was able to fend off a dominating first set performance by Rochester to advance to the semi-finals 15-25, 25-23, 25-15, 13-25, 15-12. UC Clermont was led by senior All-American Kelley Koons in the victory.
Play resumes tomorrow at 11am at the Mid-American Sports Center in Louisville, Kentucky. #1 Florida College will take on #3 SVU, while #1 Spalding will face #3 UC Clermont. In pool play, Spalding defeated UC Clermont 25-20, 26-24, while Florida College defeated SVU 25-13, 25-19. The two winners will face off on in the championship match at 3pm, while the losers will meet in a consolation match at 1pm.
DAY 1, November 5, 2009
The first two rounds of pool play started today at the 2009 USCAA Volleyball National Championships. Each team played two games in a best of three format. For the fans that stuck around, the last match of the day proved to be the most entertaining. Southern Virginia edged Rochester College in a match that featured big-time serves, long rallies, and great individual performances.
The surprise of the day was Talladega College. After losing their first match, they battled back against Penn State Fayette, coming from as many as ten points down in the second set to steal the win. Currently, Spalding, UC Clermont, and Southern Virginia have the early edge in seeding. Spalding and UC Clermont face off tomorrow morning in the battle of the unbeatens. Play resumes tomorrow at 10 am at the Mid-American Sports Complex in Louisville, Kentucky.
