The Women's Championship game between Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Marygrove College took place at 2 PM on Sunday.  Marygove College continued their fantastic defensive effort during the tournament, as they shutout Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on the way to a 3-0 victory. A first year soccer program, Marygrove College,featured fine play from several young defensive players and goals from Janina Valasco and Tournament MVP Nicole Mabee.

 Congratulations to Marygove College, the 2009 USCAA Women's Soccer National Champions.

 

Day 2 - November 7, 2009

 Women's Soccer Tournament

In the 11 AM consolation game between first seed Southern Virginia University and fourth seed Judson College, Southern Virginia University controlled the game early and cruised to an 8-0 victory.

In the 1 PM consolation game between sixth seed Unity College and seventh seed Vermont Tech, Vermont Tech led 3-0 before Unity College rallied to tie the game at 3-3.  Vermont Tech took the victory with two late goals in the final four minutes 5-3

In the 1 PM semi-final game featuring fifth seed NHTI and eighth seed Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College, Saint Mary-of-the-woods Erin Pugh scored two goals, including the game winning golden goal in the last two minutes of the second overtime.  NHTI's April Frink led off the scoring with a goal in the 5th minute of the first half, before Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College rallied to advance to the Championship Final on Sunday.

In the 3 PM semi-final game featuring second seed Penn College and third seed Marygrove College, Nicole Mabee scored the lone goal thirty seconds into the match in a game that featured fine defensive performances by both teams.  Marygrove College, a first year program, will face Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in the National Championship Final on Sunday. 

Day 1 - November 6, 2009

The opening round games of the USCAA National Men's and Women's Soccer Tournaments were characterized by overtimes and upsets.  Six of the eight games went to overtime. Four games went to double overtime. Three of the four double overtime games had to be settled on penalty kicks.

In the Women's bracket, top seeded reigning champion Southern Virginia University was upset by eighth seeded St. Mary's of-the-Woods College (Indiana).

All games were played at the Tree Farm Soccer Complex in Essex, VT.  Semi-Final games will be played at South Burlington High School on Saturday, November 7.  Women's semi-final games are at 1 PM and 3 PM.  Men's semi final games are at 5 PM and 7 PM.

A consolation round will be played at the Tree Farm in Essex at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Saturday.  Championship games are scheduled for 2 PM (women) and 4 PM (men) on Sunday, November 8 at S. Burlington High School.

 

Women's Soccer Tournament

St. Mary of the Woods College (Indiana) upset top seeded and defending champion University of Southern Virginia 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Erin Pugh with one minute remaining in the second overtime period.

New Hampshire Technical Institute prevailed over Judson College (Alabama), 3-2 on penalty kicks after a hard fought double overtime contest.  Kristen Merkwan and Tana Kekyang scored goals during regulation.  Casie Bourque, Catherine Rodriguez and Samantha Kotusky each found the net in the PK round.

Penn College defeated host Vermont Tech, 3-2,  on an overtime goal scored by April Champion, assisted by Kierstin Steer.  Alexis Brown and Julie Yeager scored for Penn College during regulation.  Vermont Tech's two goals were both scored by Alyssa Costa.

Marygrove College (Michigan) edged Unity College (Maine), 2-0.  Ashley Inglsbee and Sarah Kator scored for Marygrove.  USCAA All-American Shana DeVoe earned the shutout.
