Daemen College Extends Lead in 2012-2013 Director's Cup Race

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – After winning their fourth championship on the year (men’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and women’s basketball), the Daemen College Wildcats have extended their lead in the 2012-2013 USCAA Director’s Cup standings. With two-thirds of the season behind us, the Wildcats now hold a commanding 245 point advantage over their nearest challenger, last year’s Director’s Cup award winner, the Lindenwood-Belleville Lynx.

Daemen College excelled in the USCAA’s fall championship season with first-place finishes at the 2012 Golf National Championship, the 2012 Women’s Soccer National Championship, and 2012 Women’s Volleyball National Championship. This winter the Wildcats earned berths to the 2013 USCAA Basketball National Championships in men’s and women’s basketball. Seeded first entering the tournament, the Daemen College women’s basketball team ran the table in Uniontown, defeating University of Maine-Fort Kent, Rochester College, and the Lindenwood-Belleville Lynx. Daemen College nearly managed a Division I basketball sweep, with their men’s basketball team falling to Rochester College in the championship finals.

Lindenwood-Belleville sits in second-place with 413.5 points. On the year the Lynx have a second-place finish in Men’s Golf, a third-place finish in Men’s Cross Country, and a runner-up performance in Women’s Division I basketball. A year after winning two National Championships and earning berths in all but one of the USCAA’s National Championships, the Lynx will now look to secure a second-place finish with a strong spring sport season. Trailing Lindenwood-Belleville is the Rochester College Warriors with 374.5 points. After entering the winter season in tenth-place, Rochester secured a semifinals appearance in women’s basketball and took home the Men’s Division I Basketball National Championships to propel up the standings.

NHTI, having attended six of eight possible tournaments so far this year, remains in fourth place with 349.5 total points. The SUNY-ESF Mighty Oaks, who left the fall season in second-place, have dropped to fifth in the latest standings with 338.5 points. The biggest surprise in the top ten is Warren Wilson College, currently sitting at sixth-place in the post-winter Director’s Cup standings.  With 319 points the Owls are on pace for their top finish in school history. Strong finishes in Men’s Cross Country, Men’s Soccer, and Women’s Soccer combined with the Owl’s first ever USCAA National Championship in Men’s Division II Basketball have paced the Owls unprecedented rise in the standings. Rounding out the top ten are SUNY-Canton (315.5), Southern Virginia University (315), Albany College of Pharmacy (294.5), and Penn State Fayette (241.5).

The 2012-2013 USCAA Championship winners are: Men’s Golf-Daemen College; Women’s Soccer-Daemen College; Men’s Soccer-Briarcliffe College; Women’s Volleyball-Daemen College; Women’s Cross Country-Southern Virginia University; Men’s Cross Country-SUNY-ESF; Men’s Division I Basketball-Rochester College; Women’s Division I Basketball-Daemen College; Men’s Division II Basketball-Warren Wilson College; Women’s Division II Basketball-Albany College of Pharmacy.

Director’s Cup points are awarded for number of sport offerings and are also based on results from USCAA National Championship events. The final standings will be announced at the USCAA’s National Convention, held in Virginia Beach from June 2-5^th.
