Three Fall Championships Give Daemen College Director’s Cup Lead

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A dominant fall campaign has given USCAA newcomer Daemen College a significant lead in the 2012-13 USCAA Director’s Cup standings. The Wildcats captured three fall championships, including men’s golf, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, to finish the fall season with 468 points, nearly 130 more points than their closest competitor, SUNY ESF.

Daemen kicked off the fall championship season with a win at the 2012 USCAA Golf National Championships at the Penn State Golf Courses, winning the team title by 15 strokes. The Wildcats’ Kyle Kapturowski also took home the individual medalist honors at the championship.

Then, in the matter of two days in early November, Daemen captured the women’s soccer and women’s volleyball championships. After climbing the final coaches’ poll ranking with a three-game winning streak, the Wildcats continued their winning ways with a win over defending women’s soccer champion, Maine-Fort Kent, in the championship. Daemen’s women’s volleyball team would then go on to defeat defending champion Florida College the next day.

Daemen’s nearest challenger is SUNY ESF, who finishes the fall season with 338.5 points. SUNY ESF’s men’s soccer team picked up a first round win in the soccer championship before falling to WVU Tech in the semifinals. But the Mighty Oaks garnered their most points on the final weekend of the fall championships, finishing third at the USCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship and repeating as the Men’s Cross Country National Champions.

SUNY Canton, who finished fourth at the Women’s Volleyball National Championship and eighth at golf, currently stands in third place in the initial Director’s Cup standings with 315.5 points. NHTI, whose participation in five of the six fall championships boosted their points total to 309, sits in fourth place, and defending Director’s Cup champion Lindenwood University-Belleville rounds out the top five with 277 points.

The 2012-13 USCAA Fall Championship winners are: Men’s Golf—Daemen College; Women’s Soccer—Daemen College; Men’s Soccer—Briarcliffe College; Women’s Volleyball—Daemen College; Women’s Cross Country—Southern Virginia University; Men’s Cross Country—SUNY ESF.

Director’s Cup points are awarded for number of sport offerings and are also based on results from USCAA National Championship events. The winter standings will be released in March after the 2013 USCAA National Basketball Championships.
