Firestone Stadium, Akron Racers Selected to Host 2014 and 2015 Softball Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The USCAA has announced that the Akron Racers and Penn State Beaver have been named the hosts of the 2014 and 2015 USCAA Softball National Championships. The championships, to be held at historic Firestone Stadium, will return to Akron, OH from May 11-14, 2014 and May 10-13, 2015.

“The USCAA is thrilled to return to Akron for the USCAA Softball National Championships,” says USCAA Associate Director Matt Simms. “The leadership shown by the staffs of the Akron Racers and Penn State Beaver coupled with a first class stadium have made Akron an established destination for the Small College Softball World Series.”

The Racers and Penn State Beaver, who began as co-hosts in 2010, have hosted the championships the previous four years. In that time, four different schools have been crowned National Champions, including Robert Morris-Springfield, Rochester College, Spalding University and Lindenwood-Belleville.

"I am extremely excited to continue hosting the USCAA Championships," says Tournament Director and Akron Racers owner Joey Arrietta. "Our community and our staff welcome the opportunity to provide a first-class event for the participating universities."

The Softball Championships have grown since Akron’s inception as a host site, as two spots were added to the field in 2013 to bring the total teams competing each year to ten. The tournament expansion was necessary due to the USCAA’s growth, and made possible because of the Racers two adjacent fields.

“Their two facilities within close proximity allowed us to add two teams to the tournament last year,” says Penn State Beaver Athletic Director Andy Kirschner. “It’s a perfect set-up for the way our tournament is run and structured, and they keep the fields in great condition.”
