The USCAA Welcomes Mississippi University for Women as a New Member for the 2017-18 Academic Year

NORFOLK, VA – The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and its Board of Directors have announced the addition of Mississippi University for Women to the association’s membership for the 2017-18 academic year.

Located in Columbus, Mississippi, “The W” was established in 1884 as the first public women’s college in the United States. The institution’s current name was adopted in 1974 and male students have been admitted since 1982. Mississippi University for Women offers over 50 academic majors, 13 graduate programs, and has a full-time student enrollment of 3,000 students.

During the 2017-18 academic year, The W will field its first intercollegiate athletic teams since 2002.

“This is a great testament to the hard work that our athletic staff has done in building a new program at The W, and it is an honor to be a member of a national organization whose emphasis, like ours, is on the development of the whole student,” said President Jim Borsig.

The re-launch of athletics at Mississippi University for Women will feature teams in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, baseball, and softball next year. In the 2018-19 academic year, The W will add men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s soccer. The third year will bring men’s and women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse to complete the rollout of the school’s new athletics program.

 “The USCAA is an energetic and growing organization, and those qualities also represent the athletic department at Mississippi University for Women.” says USCAA Associate Director and Chief Operating Office, Michael Goodman. “We believe in our mission; to provide moving and memorable student-athlete experiences, no matter the size of their school, and The W shares in that objective. We’re proud to begin this partnership, thrilled to begin working with Jason Trufant and his staff, and thank Dr. Borsig for his support.”

Trufant, Director of Athletics at Mississippi University stated, “Becoming a member of the USCAA is a tremendous honor and we look forward to becoming a positive contributor in all facets. This organization has a proven history of enhancing the overall student-athlete experience, through its sport championships and student-athlete recognition awards.  We are very grateful to the USCAA staff and board of directors for approving our membership and we look forward to building a great relationship with all member institutions.”

The W’s membership begins in full on July 1st, 2017 and all programs will be eligible for USCAA National Championship events in 2017-18.

The USCAA’s focus is to enhance member institutions through athletics. The association intends to achieve this goal by providing opportunities for small colleges to compete on an equal level of competition with schools of like size and athletic programs. The USCAA conducts 12 national championships, names All-Americans, recognizes scholar athletes, and promote USCAA member schools in various means.
