2012 USCAA Soccer National Championships: Day One Recap

Asheville, NC – The first day of the 2012 USCAA Soccer National Championships is in the books. In the women’s bracket University of Maine-Fort Kent, Carlow University, Albany College of Pharmacy, and Daemen College will be advancing to the semi-finals. In the men’s soccer bracket University of Maine-Fort Kent, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Briarcliffe College, and SUNY-ESF find themselves moving on to the semi-finals.

Two-time defending women’s soccer National Champion University of Maine-Fort Kent was able to advance again to the semi-finals by defeating the Warren Wilson College Owls 6-0. Leading Maine-Fort Kent was USCAA All-American Katherine Ferland who registered a hat trick in the contest. Second-seeded Carlow University held off University of Maine-Machias by a score of 3-0, with a great defensive effort and goals from Janelle McIntyre, Marla Sasko, and Marisa Czapor. Albany College of Pharmacy, paced by two goals from USCAA All-American Sarah Cope, defeated the fourth-seeded Paul Smith’s College Bobcats 5-1. The Daemen College Wildcats upset the third-seeded Penn College Wildcats 2-0 to round up women’s soccer action on day one. Goals from Kim Obermeier and USCAA All-American Alexa Amato led Daemen in victory.

The University of Maine-Fort Kent, the number one seed in the men’s soccer bracket, defeated the Warren Wilson College Owls by a score of 3-0. Sebastian Arsenault, Christopher Brooks, and Ross Downie registered goals for the Bengals. West Virginia University Institute of Technology used a blistering offensive attack to defeat the Penn College Wildcats 10-0. Hayden Brooks, Sam Laughton, and USCAA All-American Joe Jackson added two goals each in the contest. The sixth-seeded SUNY ESF Mighty Oaks upset the Concordia College Alabama Hornets 3-0. USCAA All-American Kyle Siegel, Dillon Buchberg, and Kyle Bardwell scored for the Mighty Oaks in the winning effort. 2011 runner-up Briarcliffe College defeated NHTI by a score of 3-0. Leandro Placido, Giancarlo Luna, and Michael Richardson tallied goals for Briarcliffe in victory.  

Second round action begins at 11:00 am tomorrow at the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex with the women’s soccer games. The men’s soccer games will follow at 1:00 PM.
