MONACA, PA - On Friday, August 28th, Ohio State Marion, Penn College, Penn State Fayette, Rochester College, and UC Clermont converged on Monaca, PA for the 2009 Penn State Beaver/USCAA Pre-Season Volleyball Tournament.
In pool play on Friday, Ohio State Marion defeated Penn College 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-10) and Rochester held off Fayette 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 25-14, 15-10) in the first round of games. In Friday's night cap, Rochest College defeated UC Clemont 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) to advance to Saturday's Championship game. Beaver fell to Ohio State Marion 3-1 (20-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-19) as Marion advanced to the Championship game to meet Rochester.
On Saturday, pool play wrapped up with Beaver defeating Penn College, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22) and UC Clermont defeating Fayette, 3-1 (25-14, 25-14, 26-28, 25-21). With the wins, Beaver and Clermont advanced to the third place game. Penn College and Fayette met in the 5th place game, with Fayette coming out on top 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-11) to take 5th place. In the third place game, UC Clermont took down host Beaver 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) to claim 3rd place. In the championship, Rochester College defeated Ohio State Marion 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22).
Seven players were named to the all tournament team:. Sophomore Libero Megan Gibson (Ohio State Marion), Senior Middle Hitter Alyssa Covas (Penn College), Freshman Outside Hitter Leah Ambrosini (Fayette), Senior Middle Hitter Kelley Koons (UC Clermont), Junior Outside Hitter Heather Sandusky (Beaver), Freshman Libero Emily Rajter (Rochester College) and Junior Outside Hitter Breana Studholme (Rochester). Studholme was named the MVP of the tournament.
