Illinois Tech SAAC Hosts Hazing Prevention Luncheon

CHICAGO, Ill.- On Monday, September 28th, the Illinois Tech Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) hosted a luncheon for all current athletes about hazing prevention.

As a follow up to last week’s National Hazing Prevention Week, SAAC felt it was important to highlight the importance of what hazing is, how it effects individuals as well as the team as a whole, and what to do if you see or feel you have been a part of a hazing situation.

"The luncheon opened some eyes," said SACC President and two-sport athlete Quentin Shipley-Mellon. "It helped defined what hazing is and what actions need to be taken if it were to occur. Hazing is unfortunately a problem in colleges and universities, which reaches beyond the world of athletics. It is our hope that Illinois Tech Student-Athletes can do the right things and set the proper examples, not only in athletics, but throughout the university and in life as a whole."

"I had the opportunity to not only learn about what hazing is defined as at Illinois Tech, but also hear statistics of its occurrences and how infrequently instances are reported," said April Wanagas, a SAAC member and two-sport athlete. "It allowed me to better understand how beneficial this workshop for our student-athletes really was."

Athletic Director Joe Hakes shared some inspirational words at the event, impressing upon the students that the idea of team bonding comes from working together.

"The SAAC presented some very valuable information to the rest of the student-athletes," said Hakes.

"The definition of hazing is often different from people’s perception of what it is. The group did a good job of showing how easily an action can become hazing and become a problem for all involved. Sometimes bad things happen out of well-meaning intentions, and we need to be able to see the line that can be crossed."

Illinois Tech's SAAC strives to build a sense of unity among student-athletes and

the university while fostering leadership, active participation, and professional development on campus and in the local community.
