Coach Aycock Honored by Indy Eleven

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) head women’s soccer coach Mike Aycock was honored on August 30 at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium during Indiana Soccer Heritage Night with the Indy Eleven.

Coach Aycock was honored on August 30 at the Indy Eleven match vs. the New York Cosmos. The evening included coach Aycock being invited to a special pre-match reception and being recognized on the field at halftime.

The event is designed to pay tribute to those in Indiana who have paved the way for soccer throughout the state. Members of the Indy Eleven staff and the Brickyard Battalion, an Indy Eleven fan organization, put on the event in an effort to recognize the history of soccer throughout the state and all of those who have helped grow its popularity.

The goal of the event is to have an annual "homecoming" where Indiana’s soccer pioneers will be able to come together and celebrate Indiana Soccer with the Indy Eleven.

“At the Indy Eleven, we know our existence could not be possible without the efforts of these individuals before us, and this is our homage to them,” said Matt Boullt, Marketing Intern for the Indy Eleven.

The invitees to the festivities included a wide range of those who have helped grow Indiana soccer. The list of those invited to heritage night included members from the Indiana Invaders (PDL, 1998-2011), the Fort Wayne Fever (W-League, 2004-09), F.C. Indiana (NPSL, 2007-09), the Fort Wayne Flames (AISA), the Indiana Twisters (CISL, 1996-97), the Indianapolis Braves, (NPSL, 2007), the Indiana Blast (USISL D3, A-League, PDL, 1997-2004), the Fort Wayne Fever (PDL, 2003-09), the Indianapolis Daredevils, (ASL, 1978-79), the Indiana Tigers (ASL, 1973-74), the Indiana Blaze (W-League, 1997-2001), players from Indiana who have represented the United States national teams, those who have made major contributions to the sport in Indiana, and members of the championship winning teams from Indiana University and Notre Dame.

Coach Aycock’s contribution to soccer in Indiana and in particular in the Terre Haute area is what earned him the right to be recognized at heritage night. His resume includes having served as head men’s soccer coach at Indiana State University and currently as head women’s coach at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Coach Aycock also is the co-founder, first president, and board member of the Vigo County Youth Soccer Association, in which he serves as an instructor. He served as the state staff coach for the Olympic Development Program and has served as the director of various soccer camps across the state. On January 29th, 2011, coach Aycock was inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements and contribution to the game.

As a player, he was Indiana State University’s Soccer Club team captain. He was also a member of the Indianapolis Soccer Club and captain of the Terre Haute Soccer Club and the Wabash Eleven Soccer Club.

“I’m very grateful to the Indy Eleven for creating this event and honoring me with an invitation,” said coach Aycock. “It was great to see old comrades in the sport, and, of course, it’s always nice to be recognized. I think the Indy Eleven are doing a great job of making professional soccer work in Indiana and attracting a whole new generation of fans. It’s very exciting.”

Coach Aycock is in his 15th season with SMWC soccer and has the Pomeroys off to a 1-2-0 start in 2014.
