New Jersey men's soccer team puts forth valiant effort but ultimately drops match to University of Maine at Fort Kent, 3-0 on Friday evening

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team dropped its fourth consecutive contest on Friday evening, falling to the defending-USCAA National Division II Men's Soccer champions – the Bengals of the University of Maine at Fort Kent – by a score of 3-0 in a match played in Medford, MA. With the defeat, the Knights slipped to a mark of 6-5 on the 2016 season, while the Bengals kept their perfect season intact, improving a mark of 14-0.

The Knights certainly didn't make the University of Maine at Fort Kent's 14th consecutive victory easy. The Bengals did notch a goal in the early stages of the contest when Rodney Witter collected a pass from Ben Kluvers before blasting the ball home to give his team a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute. That would be the only goal of the opening session – and the only tally over the next 72 minutes of action combined.

Berkeley College used stellar goaltending by Thierry Augustin to keep the match a one-goal affair until the 78th minute when the Bengals would break through for an insurance goal as Kluvers found the back of the net to give his team a 2-0 advantage. Witter – who was assisted by Kluvers on the match's opening goal – returned the favor by recording an assist on the play. Maine Fort Kent would add one final goal – an unassisted tally by Miguel Barnaby in the 90th minute (89:45) to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bengals. That would be the final goal of the match.

It was the 11th shutout victory of the season for Maine Fort Kent – a team that certainly looks poised to make another deep run into the USCAA Division II National Soccer Tournament in November. The Knights certainly put forth a hearty effort despite the defeat, a sentiment expressed by Head Coach Bruno Ferreira following the match.

"I feel our team definitely left everything out on the field today," Ferreira said. "When you're playing a team like the University of Maine at Fort Kent, you absolutely have to bring your A game, otherwise you're going to be in for a long night. We'll look to shake off this defeat and bounce back against Fisher College tomorrow."

The Bengals held a 27-14 edge in the shots category, while also attempting seven corner kicks compared to one for Berkeley College. Augustin made 11 saves for the Knights despite the defeat, and Akheim Forbes only had to stop three shots in recording the shutout.

The Knights will look to halt their losing skid at four matches as they take on Fisher College on Saturday afternoon in Medford, MA at 4:00pm.
