Canton, NY-
The Bryant & Stratton College- Syracuse Women's Basketball team defeated NCAA Division III opponent, SUNY Canton on Monday night, 76-66. The victory for the Lady Bobcats maintains their perfect start to the season and improves their record to 4-0.
How it happened:
The Lady Bobcats started the game a little sluggish after making the two and a half hour trip up to Canton, NY. The slow start combined with the 'Roos of SUNY Canton shooting 58.8 percent from the field and 3-4 from three resulted in the Lady Bobcats trailing by 9 points after the 1st quarter.
What sparked the change between the first and second quarter is tough to say, but the Lady Bobcats shook off their slow start and began to claw their way back into the game. Strong defensive play from guards, Jehiah Cook and Valena Hickerson were key in the Lady Bobcats efforts to close the gap before halftime. Their energy on the defensive end resulted in steals and easy baskets in transition to weather the storm of the 'Roos.
Heading into the half, the Lady Bobcats only trailed by 4, 36-32.
In the second half, the pressure put on the 'Roos by the entire Lady Bobcats defense continued to cause problems and create turnovers. Another huge performance from Eunice Sillong (18 points, 22 rebounds) helped the Lady Bobcats close out defensive possessions and get out in transition.
The duo of Jehiah Cook and Valena Hickerson continued to thrive in the second half pushing the tempo and getting to the basket with ease. Cook would finish with a game-high 25 points and Hickerson added 22 of her own.
The three players mentioned scored 65 of the Lady Bobcats 76 points and helped them to earn their 4th straight victory to start the season, 76-66.
"We did a great job responding to adversity," said Head Coach Quantae Elijah. "This was the first time this season that a team took a large lead against us, so it was great to see our team respond the way that we did. We did not panic and we stuck together which is so important to do when things get tough."
Next Game:
The Lady Bobcats will have another break with the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner. They will be back in action on Saturday, December 3rd vs. Fisher College at 4pm for their home opener.
