New York men's soccer team rallies to defeat Mighty Oaks 2-1 in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up a nice victory on Sunday afternoon, rallying from an early first half deficit to defeat the Mighty Oaks of SUNY ESF by a score of 2-1 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. With the win, the Knights snapped their three-match losing streak and improved to 9-5 on the 2015 campaign (5-0 HVIAC), while SUNY ESF dipped to 6-6 overall (4-2 HVIAC).

The Mighty Oaks jumped out ahead in the early stages of the opening session when Jorge Guarin blasted a ball past Berkeley netminder Masahiro Kiuchi to give his team a 1-0 advantage. 15 minutes later (at 35:00), the Knights evened the score when newcomer Hasan Sezer netted a goal, slipping a ball into the net past a diving Cameron Schiavone. At the half, the game was tied 1-1.

In the second half, the Knights took the lead for good when Sezer notched his second goal of the contest at 76:00 to push Berkeley ahead by a score of 2-1. The Knights played smothering defense over the final 14 minutes of the contest to solidify the impressive conference win. Following the match, Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"This was a great come-from-behind victory for our team," Zomopoulos said. A win like this builds character for our club, and I am very impressed with the way we responded once we got behind early. We'll look to carry this momentum into Wednesday's game against Baruch College."

The Knights will look to win their second consecutive game on Wednesday, as Berkeley will take on the Bearcats of Baruch College on the No. 50 field at Randall's Island. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
