The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team won its second consecutive contest in thrilling fashion, as Gennaro Vittorioso scored the match-winning goal with 7:43 remaining to push the Knights past the Bulldogs of Dean College by a score of 4-3 in Massachusetts. With the win, Berkeley improved to a mark of 3-7 on the 2018 campaign, while Dean College dipped to 1-10.
The Knights netted two quick goals in today's contest, with Carlos Goncalves accounting for the first tally at 2:11 (from Ignacio Sanin), and Sanin recorded the second goal at 3:58 (from Wender Lima). Later in the opening session, at 34:49, Lima would notch a goal of his own, receiving a beautiful lead pass from Marcos Hidalgo before burying the ball into the back of the net. As the teams broke for halftime, Berkeley College held a commanding 3-0 edge.
Dean College would storm back in the second half, starting with a goal from Danny Isaksen (assisted by Davonn Smith) in the 53rd minute (52:15). That pulled the Bulldogs to within 3-1. Smith would inch Dean closer, as he would blast the ball past Knights netminder Robert Parker at 56:24 (from Tyler Medeiros) to slice Berkeley's advantage to one goal at 3-2. The Bulldogs would tie the match in the 75th minute (74:42) when Felipe Campos would score (assisted by Smith) to make it 3-3.
Later, with 7:43 remaining in the match, Berkeley's Gennaro Vittorioso would score an unassisted goal to catapult the Knights to a 4-3 advantage. Berkeley would not relinquish that lead, holding on for the one-goal victory.
Berkeley dominated the opening session offensively, out-shooting the Bulldogs by a count of 13-4. Dean dominated most of the second stanza, recording a total of 20 shots to the Knights' six. Berkeley goalkeeper Robert Parker made nine saves despite allowing the three goals. His counterpart, Devin Moore, allowed four goals while stopping five shots.
The Knights will look to make it three consecutive wins on Monday afternoon, as Berkeley will travel to Mahwah, NJ to battle Ramapo College. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
