Big Broncos First Half Unable to Carry Over in Defeat at Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (January 28, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team started off strong Sunday at Morrisville State, leading by as much as 13 points in the first half and Samiaya Salley scoring 15 of her 22 points in the first two quarters. The Broncos even opened up as much as a 45-36 lead to begin the third quarter before the Mustangs rallied to lead, 58-49, at quarter's end and take a 71-63 win over Delhi.

The Broncos, now 13-9 on the year, opened the game shooting well, making 17-of-35 shots in the first half, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Despite the strong third-quarter start, Delhi made just 5-of-18 shots in the period, while Morrisville State made 11-of-21, including a trio of threes, to put them out in front for good. Delhi finished at 40.3 percent (29-for-72) shooting to the Mustangs' 39.7 percent (27-for-68). Another major factor in the defeat was the free throw line, in which the Broncos made 0-of-6 charity shots, while Morrisville State made 9-of-11. The Mustangs also finished with eight 3-pointers to the Broncos five, and led, 50-37, in rebounds.

Salley made four of Delhi's 3-pointers, and finished with eight rebounds. The sophomore now has 914 career points, putting her closer to the 1,000 point mark and becoming the second Bronco ever to amass this feat, as well as reaching it in two years; Jennifer LePinnet-Clark (2002-04) was the first, totaling 1,033 career points.

Katie Herba netted 12 points and finished tied for the game lead with nine rebounds. Camryn McDonald logged nine points with five rebounds and five assists, while Erica Cornmire registered eight points and four assists. Kiera Holland recorded six points with four assists, and Diana Echols totaled six points and four rebounds.

With six more regular season games, head coach Vicki Andruszkiewicz's team can still qualify for the USCAA Division II National Tournament. The Broncos are eligible for one of the four at-large bids for the eight-team championship at Penn State Fayette. Delhi has a pair of game this week, hosting Davis on Tuesday and SUNY Canton on Saturday. The Broncos then travel out to Alfred State on Feb. 10, Villa Maria on Feb. 11 and Cazenovia on Feb. 15, then return home for their regular season finale versus Central Penn on Feb. 17.
