Berkeley College New York men's soccer team defeated by Culinary Institute of America in crucial HVIAC contest

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team dropped a pivotal Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Monday evening, falling to the Steels of Culinary Institute of America by a score of 2-0 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the win, the Steels clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming HVIAC tournament, as Culinary Institute improved to 9-4-1 overall and 5-1 in conference competition. With the loss, the Knights fell to 5-10 on the 2014 campaign, including a mark of 3-2 in HVIAC play.

The Steels took control of the match early, as Dan Landon received a pass from Joseph Bosco and buried a ball past Berkeley College goalkeeper Renzo Loaiza to give his team a 1-0 lead at the 8:01 mark of the contest. That goal would be the only one scored during the opening session, as Culinary Institute of America held a 1-0 at the half.

In the second session, the Steels scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Dan Landon would notch his second goal of the game (this one unassisted at 78:09) to increase CIA's lead to 2-0. The Steels' defense held stiff down the stretch, and the Knights were unable to record a goal as CIA held on for the two-goal victory.

Steels netminder Jonathan Bedell played a terrific game in net for his club, stopping six shots in recording a shutout. Berkeley College has now been shutout three consecutive games, and seven times this season overall.

Berkeley College out-shot Culinary Institute of America by a count of 17-12, and the Knights had five corner kicks compared to four for the Steels. CIA was whistled for 19 fouls on the evening, while Berkeley committed 14.

The Knights will play their regular season finale on Wednesday evening, as Berkeley will host St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn at Aviator Field. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
