New Jersey men's soccer team outlasted by Penn State Hazleton, 3-2 in double overtime

For the second straight contest, the Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team lost a match in double overtime, today to the Nittany Lions of Penn State Hazleton by a score of 3-2 in Hazleton, PA. With the defeat, the Knights slipped to 2-9 on the year, while the Nittany Lions improved to 9-3 overall.

Penn State Hazleton's Ryan Lieb got the Nittany Lions on the board first when he took a pass in the open field from Joe Torres and buried it in the upper left corner of the goal. Hazleton controlled the ball during the early stages of competition, but the Knights pressed the Lions late in the session – and with 35 ticks remaining in the first half – Berkeley earned a penalty kick off a Nittany Lions foul in the box. Joao Perreiras netted the penalty kick to square the match at halftime 1-1.

In the 72nd minute, the Lions committed their second foul resulting in a penalty kick. Once again Perreiras fired a lazer passed the Hazleton goaltender to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage. Hazleton would strike back shortly thereafter, as Steven Principe fired a corner kick to the front of net forcing the Berkeley netminder to play the ball. The keeper knocked the ball away but Johnson was able to head it in left side to even the match at 2-2, earning his squad a trip to overtime.

After both teams failed to score a game-winning goal in overtime period number one, Hazleton found itself on the attack in the second overtime session. Steve Principe found a streaking Tyler Wyllie in a crowd at the net. Wyllie tapped the ball to the top right corner of the net, ending the game as the Hazleton players and sideline personnel erupted.

Despite being outshot by the Knight's by a 34-11 margin, Hazleton managed to score three goals on just five shots on target. Nittany Lions netminder Jimmy Fisher saved 13 shots on goal while allowing two goals on penalty kicks.

Berkeley College will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights will host the York College Cardinals at New Jersey Institute of Technology at 4:00pm.
