Lions Top Valley Forge In Final Non-League Test

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. -- Cashae Hinton (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) scored 22 points and Penn State Brandywine closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 88-75 victory at the University of Valley Forge on Monday night.

Hinton made 7-of-15 shots from the field and 8-of-10 free throws, while also adding five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Lauren Munro (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) connected on all eight of her field goal attempts, scoring 16 points, and Jessy Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) added 12 points.

Brandywine led for nearly the entire first quarter, but Jhanel Brown netted 10 consecutive points for the Patriots, helping UVF build a three-point lead late in the quarter.

A jumper from Chrissy Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) helped Brandywine retake the lead at the 2:49 mark of the second quarter; however, UVF used a pair of Taniyah Faison free throws to knot the score at 43-43 after 20 minutes.

Hinton and Munro combined for 10 points during a 14-5 spurt to open the third quarter and the Lions took an eight-point lead into the final stanza as Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) netted nine-straight Brandywine points after Valley Forge has closed the deficit to just one.

Brandywine's lead reached double figures for the first time following Chelsea Dent's (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) layup early in the fourth quarter and the Lions' edge would not dip below six the rest of the way.

Brandywine sank 18 of its 22 free throw attempts and shot 44 percent from the field, while turning the ball over just nine times. Valley Forge, which received 24 points and 16 rebounds from Brown, committed 26 turnovers, leading to 30 points for Brandywine.

The Lions (13-8, 6-4 PSUAC) visit Penn State York on Tuesday looking for a season sweep. Brandywine topped York 77-73 at home on Jan. 30.
