New York women's soccer teams kicks-off 2014 season with defeat at the hands of King's College; Kerry-Ann Haughton collects two goals despite loss

The Berkeley College New York women's soccer team began its 2014 campaign on Tuesday evening, taking on the Lions of King's College (NYC) at field No. 50 at Randall's Island. The Knights came out on the wrong end of their season-opener, falling to the Lions by a score of 10-2. With the win, King's College improved to 5-2 overall, and 2-0 in HVIAC competition. Berkeley is 0-1 both on the season and in conference play.

In a game that was shortened to 70 minutes due to darkness, King's College raced out to an early 3-0 thanks to three goals in a 10:30 span by standout Genesis Castrellon. She notched her goals at 6:30 (unassisted), 10:00 (off a pass from Aleena Cruz), and at 16:00 (from Caitlin Essex).

Berkeley College continued to play hard despite falling behind, as the Knights were able to net a goal when Kerry-Ann Haughton lifted a ball that levatated just over the out-stretched reach of King's College netminder Victoria McAlister. That score brought the Knights to within 3-1, but three more Lions tallies (another by Castrellon, one by Cruz, and a goal by Maizy Medley) put King's College up 6-1 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lions put an exclamation point on their victory, scoring four more goals to reach 10 for the contest. The Knights did have a bright spot, however, as Haughton tallied her second goal of the game - and that goal was assisted by Daisy Velez.

King's College out-shot Berkeley College by a count of 20-4 for the evening, while also receiving four corner kicks on the night to none for the Knights.

Berkeley will look to bounce back and pick up its first victory of the season on Thursday, as the Knights take to the road to battle Briarcliffe College at Triangle Park. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
