New Jersey men's soccer team states case for spot in USCAA National Tournament by silencing Washington Adventist 1-0 Saturday evening

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team picked up a huge victory Saturday evening, defeating the Shock of Washington Adventist University by a score of 1-0 at Harvey Field in Kearny, NJ. With the victory, the Knights finalized their 2014 regular season with a record of 11-7, winning 10 of their final 12 games in the process. With their recent surge, they will be given strong consideration for a 2014 USCAA National Tournament bid - and they will learn their fate as it pertains to that on Monday evening at 5:30pm when the selections are announced. Washington Adventist University fell to 8-7-1 with the loss, and the Shock will also learn their tournament fate this coming Monday as well.

On what was an absolute gorgeous evening weather-wise at Harvey Field, both teams came out putting forth their best efforts, though the Knights had more scoring opportunities in the opening stanza. Berkeley College out-shot the Shock 14-6 in the period, but neither team was able to notch the elusive first goal of the game, and the teams broke for halftime scoreless.

In the second period, the Knights stayed aggressive, and eventually took the lead in the 72nd minute (71:20) when senior Nuno Santos kicked a ball from 40 yards out that deflected off the tips of Washington Adventist netminder Jordhon Horelien's fingers and into the net, as the Knights erupted in celebration. That goal proved to be the difference maker as Berkeley College held the Shock off the scoreboard the remainder of the game and held on for the slim 1-0 victory. Following the game, Berkeley College Head Coach Bruno Ferreira gave his thoughts.

"I'm very proud of the way the team stuck together and believed in themselves after we got out to a slow start this season," Ferreira said. "We began 1-5, but we never believed that we were finished. We've won 10 out of 12, and our confidence is sky-high at the moment. We hope that we've done enough to get a bid to the upcoming USCAA National Tournament. Now we wait and see."

The Knights dominated the shots category, out-shooting the Shock 26-8 for the game. Washington Adventist University was whistled for 18 fouls compared to 13 for Berkeley College. As for the goaltenders, Knights netminder Christian Vidreiro needed just three saves to record a shutout. His counterpart - Horelien - made nine stops despite taking the loss in goal.
