Algeo Earns 100th Career Victory In Lions’ Sweep

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Head Coach Melissa Algeo became the first Penn State Brandywine volleyball coach to reach 100 victories as the Lions sweep Penn State York 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-12) on Sunday afternoon.

Algeo, in her sixth season at Brandywine, owns a 100-45 career mark and has led the Lions to appearances in the last two PSUAC Championship matches. Brandywine is 10-0 against league foes this season, the only remaining unbeaten volleyball team in conference play.

Brandywine scored seven of the first eight points during set No. 1 and never looked back, leading by as many as 16 before winning the set 25-9. York was within 11-7 during the second set, but four consecutive kills helped balloon Brandywine's lead and the Lions closed out the second frame following a kill from Kirsten Jerla (Springfield, Pa./Notre Dame).

Brandywine trailed the final set 5-3, but used a 15-0 run, aided by seven aces from Nicolette Napoleon (Springfield, Pa./Penn Charter), and rolled through the remainder of the set to earn the match victory.

Napoleon added four digs and two blocks, while Halee Kusner (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) also tallied two blocks and set down a team-high six kills. Jerla and Nikki Poissant (Aston, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) each recorded five kills and Poissant registered three aces.

Sullivan Stark (Middletown, Del./William Penn) handed out 12 assists and Miranda Biondi (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) added 11 helpers and three aces. Emily Battista (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Kim Russo (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) tied for the team lead with five digs a piece.

Brandywine (12-3, 10-0 PSUAC) is back at home Tuesday night against Penn State Wilkes Barre at 7:00 pm.
