DELHI, N.Y. (April 21, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi softball team took advantage of the long-awaited beautiful Delhi spring weather Saturday, opening their home season with a doubleheader against SUNY Canton. The Roos took the first game, 17-8, and despite a 6-6 tie in the latter game entering the seventh inning, Canton scored the go-ahead run in the top half to complete the sweep. Head coach Vicki Andruszkiewicz's team will complete the weekend series with the Roos with another home twin bill on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Saturday's games marked not just Delhi's first home contests of the year, but marked the team's first set of games in New York State. The squad played their first 19 games in South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia.

CANTON 17, DELHI 8

The Roos totaled 22 hits in the first game and grabbed an early 12-4 lead through three innings. After another Canton run in the top of the fourth, the Broncos worked their way back into the game with four runs in the bottom half, thanks to a pair of two-RBI hits from Haylee Lefebvre and Samantha Mendelsohn. That would be Delhi's last scores, though, as the Roos tacked on a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Mendelsohn led the team with three RBIs, with the other coming on a sacrifice fly in the first that scored Renee Stilwell to tie the game at 1-1. Emily Clapper also had two ribbies when she drove in Liana Garry on a double in the second, then proceeded to score herself on a Canton throwing error. Starting pitcher Lefebvre struck out two in 2.1 innings of work before Molly Greene came on to hurl one inning, posting one K. Jenna Lutz pitched the remainder, delivering one strikeout and allowing just four earned runs on six hits.

CANTON 7, DELHI 6

The Roos offense started off the nightcap similarly with five runs in the first frame. But this time, the Broncos came ready, supplying two runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second to take a 6-5 lead. Haylee Lefebvre opened Delhi's scoring with a two-run RBI double in the first, then followed up an RBI single in the second. Emily Clapper roped in an RBI single in the second, followed by Sierra Keesler hacking a two-RBI double that scored Clapper and Yesileidy Paulino. After scoreless boxes in the third and fourth innings, Canton tied the game in the fifth on a Brittany Staltare RBI double. Staltare, who ended up with three ribbies for the game, would go on to round the bases on a go-head inside-the-park homer in the top of the seventh. Jenna Lutz pitched a complete game for the Broncos, fanning three and giving up just five earned runs on 13 hits. Samantha Mendelsohn went 3-for-4 at the plate, all singles, scoring two of Delhi's runs during the first and second-inning scoring spree. Keesler and Lefebvre both went 2-for-3.
