New York men's soccer team puts forth valiant effort in season opener, falling to FDU-Florham 1-0 in double overtime

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team (0-1) opened up 2015 season on Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights battled the Devils of FDU-Florham (1-0) at Robert T. Shields Field in Madison, NJ. The Knights – who came into the contest looking to avenge an 8-0 defeat in the season opener to FDU a year ago – gave the Devils everything they could handle, as Berkeley dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to FDU in double overtime.

The game stayed scoreless through regulation and one extra session before the Devils' Sebastian Gallo netted the game-winner at 112:02. Despite out-shooting Berkeley by a wide margin of 26-3, FDU-Florham wasn't unable to put the Knights away until the contest's final minutes.

Berkeley College's Renzo Louiza served in net for the Knights in the first half, stopping six Devils shots. He was relieved by Gustavo Moreno, who kept FDU-Florham at bay the rest of the afternoon, making seven saves in 75 minutes before allowing Gallo's goal.

With 1:30 to play in the first overtime, FDU's Robby Bonjione nearly ended the contest on a header towards the left corner of the net, but Moreno lunged and knocked the ball wide of the post to keep Berkeley alive. Later – two minutes into the second overtime – there was a flurry in front of the net, which left Moreno off his line. The Devils' George Batista then lofted a perfect cross-field pass to Gallo, who tapped the ball into the net to put the game away.

Following the defeat, Berkeley College Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"I felt that our team showed a tremendous amount of toughness this afternoon," Zomopoulos said. "Historically, FDU has always been a tough opponent for us, and I felt we left everything out on the field and made the Devils earn their victory. We'll bring the positives of this game into Thursday evening when we open up our HVIAC portion of the schedule against King's College."

FDU-Florham goalkeeper Nick Mihalik was mostly untested in the win, as he recorded a shutout aided by tremendous defense in front of him, as Berkeley College registered just three shots in just over 112 minutes of action. Bonjione and Andrew Ruane helped push the Devils' offense by combining for eight shots including six on target in the win

Berkeley College will return to action on Thursday evening as the Knights will play their home opener against the Lions of King's College (NYC) in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The game will take place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY, and will begin at 7:00pm.
