Men’s Basketball Picks Up Road Victory At New Kensington

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine earned its first road victory of the season, ending a 24-game road losing skid, after holding on to defeat Penn State New Kensington 85-76 on Sunday afternoon.

Naifes Smalls (Philadelphia, Pa./PE&T Charter) produced his first-career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and added six assists and three steals, while Cyrie Spencer (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) led Brandywine with 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Lions built a 10-point lead after five minutes of play as Terrance Quinn (Havertown, Pa./Radnor) knocked down two three-pointers and Spencer sank a layup during a 9-0 run.

New Kensington battled back to within five on three occasions, but Quinn drained his third triple of the half with 55 ticks left on the clock, pushing the lead back to double figures. PSNK sank three free throws over the final 40 seconds to pull within 39-30 at the break.

Smalls and Spencer combined for all seven Brandywine points during a 7-0 spurt as the Lions established their largest lead at 59-43 near the midway point of the final stanza; however, New Kensington steadily chipped away over the next 10 minutes and narrowed the gap to 70-66 with 1:38 to play.

Brandywine answered with the next four points and held on for the win after sinking 11 free throws over the final 53 seconds.

Quinn collected 16 points, while Marcus Turner (Claymont, Del./Chichester) added 14 points and Chris Abbonizio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) tallied 10 points and six boards off the bench.

Brandywine (6-15, 5-7 PSUAC) is back on the road Tuesday at Penn State York.
