Missed opportunities doom Knights as New York soccer team drops 2-1 decision to SUNY Canton

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team suffered a tough defeat Saturday evening, falling to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a score of 2-1 in Canton, NY. The loss dropped the Knights to 8-3 on the 2015 campaign, while SUNY Canton – with its fourth consecutive victory – improved to 4-7 on the year.

SUNY Canton goalkeeper Austin Lamay made a huge save on a Berkeley College penalty kick, and Kangaroo standouts Tyler Gallagher and Nick Escalante both recorded goals as SUNY Canton was able to edge the nights by a goal.

In a game that featured both schools getting golden opportunities to put the ball in the net, the Knights had a penalty kick opportunity after the Kangaroos were whistled for a foul in the box off a free kick. Lamay came up huge for his team, though, diving to his right to make the save as the Kangaroos cleared the rebound attempt.

The Kangaroos netted a goal 64 seconds later as Tyler Cook found Edward Malinoski Jr. in the box. Malinoski Jr. tapped the ball over to Gallagher who rifled a shot that deflected off a defender and into the net to give SUNY Canton an early 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute (at 13:21).

Later – with just over two minutes remaining in the opening session - With just more than two minutes remaining in the first half, Berkeley's Aboubacar Sogoba picked up his second yellow card of the evening – and I essence – earned a red card. The Knights would be forced to play the remainder of the game with 10 men as the Kangaroos held a 1-0 lead as time expired on the first half.

SUNY Canton earned a free kick early in the 57th minute and took advantage of the opportunity. Hunter Mowery and Escalante both gathered near the ball about 20 yards out. Mowery ran and stepped over the ball as Escalante bent a shot from left to right scoring an important goal that gave the Kangaroos a 2-0 cushion.

The Knights would get on the board in the 64th minute when Kengo Sato ripped a shot over the wall from 20 yards out into upper right corner. Berkeley College was unable to net the equalizer, though, as SUNY Canton held on for a hard-fought victory.

Despite the loss, the Knights' Gustavo Moreno made five saves.

Berkeley College will return to action on Monday afternoon, as the Knights battle the Beavers of the City College of New York at the No. 91 field at Randall's Island. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
