Brandywine Edged Out By York

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine battled back from a double-figure deficit, but Penn State York hung on for a 78-66 PSUAC men's basketball victory on Wednesday night.

Terrance Quinn (Havertown, Pa./Radnor) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Cyrie Spencer (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) sank two layups as Brandywine raced out to an early 10-2 lead.

However, York answered with a 21-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes, to jump into the lead.

Brandywine trailed 27-15, but fought back to within five following a pair of baskets from Emanuel Folkes (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and a triple from Kevin Zwolak (Lansdowne, Pa./Shipley School). Billy Vaughn-Geib's three-point play gave York a 30-22 edge after 20 minutes.

York extended its lead to 43-33 early in the second half, but a Spencer layup and long trifecta from Marcus Turner (Claymont, Del./Chichester) quickly sliced the deficit in half.

After York answered with six-straight points, Spencer's tip-in and Naifes Smalls' (Philadelphia, Pa./PE&T Charter) layup again put Brandywine within five. The Lions later closed the gap to four following a Zwolak lay in at the 8:59 mark.

Brandywine, however, would get no closer as Mike Coleman pushed the lead to double figures with a three-pointer and the teams traded buckets down the stretch.

Spencer led the Lions with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Smalls registered 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Folkes added nine points and six boards for Brandywine, which shot 36 percent from the floor.

Trent Thomas posted a game-best 28 points to pace York, which connected on 46 percent of its shots from the field and outrebounded Brandywine 49-39.

Brandywine (6-16, 5-8 PSUAC) visits Penn State Wilkes Barre Friday evening at 8:00 pm.
