COACH OF THE YEAR: Andreas Commins • Wentworth Military Academy
Andreas started at Wentworth the first day of the soccer season with no background on the players and very little preparation for the season. In spite of starting late, Coach Commins took a very diverse group of young men and developed them into a unified team. Coach Commins efforts both on and off the field has turned around and revitalized the Men's Soccer program at Wentworth Military College. Coach Commins has worked hard to build a program with a strong team culture which pursues excellence both on and off the field. The team has developed their own Philosophy and Core Values and has put in copious hours in the classroom learning goal-setting and leadership techniques. The Red Dragon players have bought 100% into Coach Commins program and philosophy which has resulted in increased performance in the classroom, with the Corps of Cadets and on the soccer field. To date, the 2014-2015 WMC Men's Soccer team is the most successful team in the history of the program. Coach Commins continuously demonstrates the integrity, commitment and love of the game which help to make him a role model for his players. Andreas is consistent, compassionate, tough, fair, hardworking, honest and thoroughly ethical in all aspects of conduct. He continually asks his players to "choose the hard right, over the easy wrong," and they have responded with positive growth on and off the field. Coach Commins' soccer and teaching skills are second to none but it is his consistent behavior and expectations for his players that so distinctly set him apart. He consistently reinforces why it is important that they do things a certain way as soccer players and as young men. Coach Commins genuinely seeks to prepare his players to succeed in life as well as on the field. Andreas has not only showed the team how to play and work as a team, but how important it is for the players to communicate in and outside of the locker room. The team has bonded and become friends and can always be found together at meal times. Coach Commins continues to challenge our players to play at a higher level and he has taken a group of individuals whom were not expected to win many games and made them a team that believes they can compete with anybody.
