ASHEVILLE, NC - Behind a one-two punch of senior forwards Katherine Ferland and Yosselin Berrueco, top-seeded University of Maine-Fort Kent defeated second-seeded Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences 7-0 for the 2015 United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship on Saturday.
With the win, the Lady Bengals have won the last three USCAA titles and four of the last five championships as they finished 20-2 on the season and won their last 14 games. Ferland recorded a hat trick with an assist while Berrueco had two goals with an assist.
The Lady Bengals opened the scoring quickly in the fourth minute as Berrueco tapped in her first goal off a feed from Marie Laurence-Montagne. Ferland got her hat trick started in the 34th minute taking a drive through the right side with a blast and a 2-0 advantage. She closed the first half scoring her second goal off a Berrueco feed to give the Lady Bengals a 3-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Berrueco got on the board for her second goal at the 49th minute which started UMFK on a three goals in seven minute span. Ferland got her third at the 51st minute and Kelsi Lamphear snuck one in at the 57th minute off a free kick that squirted by the goalkeeper for a 6-0 lead. Kayla Richards ended the scoring with a tap-in off a feed from Ferland for the 7-0 win.
Maine-Fort Kent held a 29-4 advantage in shots, and 16-2 in corner kicks en route to their third straight USCAA National Championship.
