Eagles Prevail On Road At Lakeland

Counterbalanced like Yin and Yang all the way down to having just one substitute on their respective benches and lineups loaded with freshmen, it would follow script that the KSU Tusc and Lakeland Community College volleyball teams would go five sets to determine a winner in Kirtland, Ohio on Wednesday evening.

It was a great test for the ladies from New Philadelphia in just their second match of the season, and the Eaglets took charge in a deciding fifth set to even their early season record with a 3-2 decision.

The Golden Eagles shook off the road jitters of a second straight road trip and won the opening set of the match 25-21, before the host Lakers bounced back taking the second and third sets by 27-25 and 25-20 scores. Indicative of how evenly matched the two teams were and how the night was to play out, KSU Tusc was in control of the second set leading 21-16 before Lakeland responded with a small run.

A net violation brought Lakeland to within 22-19 forcing an Eagles timeout. Out of the break, the teams rallied back and forth into deadlocks at 23-23 and 25-25 before the Lakers squeezed out the overtime win.

KSU Tusc took the fourth set 25-23 leaping to a 10-2 lead, but again the hosts fought back to a 20-20 tie. It was volley for volley until the end after the Eagles forged ahead 22-20 and 23-21, when they found their way again and eked out a 25-23 win to tie the match at 2-2.

In the fifth-set tiebreaker it was all Golden Eagles, who staked themselves to a 4-0 lead which ballooned to 6-1 and then 10-4 before they scored the last five points of the set to win in veteran-like fashion 15-4.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles host USCAA rival member Penn State Shenango with the first serve slated for 12:00 p.m.
