Brandywine’s Season Concludes At USCAA Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Penn State Brandywine men's soccer team saw its 2022 season come to a close following a 3-3 draw against Johnson & Wales-Charlotte on Saturday night at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. The Wildcats edged the Lions 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Brandywine finished the year with a 19-1-3 record, tying the 2021 squad for the highest single-season victory total in team history. The Lions completed the regular season undefeated for the first time since 1989 and set a team record with a 35-match unbeaten streak that dated back to 2021.

Chris Manful (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) added two more goals to his national scoring lead, giving him 38 for the season. Jayden Barragan (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) opened the scoring by netting his 10th goal of the campaign. All three of Brandywine's markers came during the first 33 minutes.

Barragan collected a rebound after Khafren Smith's (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) initial shot was stopped and found the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 edge less than five minutes into the game.

Johnson & Wales equaled the score during the 14th minute, but Manful netted back-to-back goals less than four minutes apart to put Brandywine back on top.

The Wildcats closed to within one just before halftime and forced extra time after scoring during the 77th minute.

Twenty scoreless minutes of extra time forced penalty kicks. Smith, Manful and Christian Zavala (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) were all successful on their attempts for the Lions, while Elijah DeBooth (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) turned away two Johnson & Wales penalty kicks, but the Wildcats prevailed by a 4-3 count.

DeBooth made five stops, while playing 110 minutes for the second-straight day.
