Jean-Gardy Derineau, Tcharly Verna score a goal apiece, Cruz-Sepulveda makes nine saves as New York men's soccer defeats Panthers, 2-0

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team began its Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of the schedule on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy by a score of 2-0. The match took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Berkeley leveled its mark at 3-3 for the season (1-0 HVIAC). On the flip side, Albany dipped to 1-3 on the year (0-1 HVIAC).

After 38 scoreless minutes, the Knights broke through for the first goal of the match when Tcharly Verna blasted a ball in from about 30 yards out on the right side to give his team a 1-0 edge at 38:22. That would be the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes of action.

In the second half, at 69:12, offensive standout Jean-Gardy Derineau, who was inside the box, received a perfect cross pass from Matthew Perreira  before burying the ball into the back of the net to catapult the Knights to a 2-0 advantage. The Panthers were only able to muster two shots for the remainder of the match, as Berkeley went on to record the shutout.

Berkeley College dominated in the shots category, recording 28 compared to just 10 for Albany College of Pharmacy.

Knights netminder Dario Cruz Sepulveda stopped nine shots while not allowing a goal. Panthers goalkeeper Ryan Hobson made 10 saves despite allowing two goals and taking the loss.

Berkeley will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Knights will host Davis College at Aviator Field. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
