Senior Night Victory Clinches Playoffs for Men's Soccer

The King's College Men's Soccer team played Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Sunday evening and came away with an important 3-0 victory. The win clinched a spot in the upcoming Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs. After coming up one win short of the playoffs in conference play in both 2016 and 2017, the Lions were on a mission this season. The victory improved King's record to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the HVIAC, the best records for Men's Soccer since the TKC Athletic program was started in New York City. They outscored their opponents 67-14 along the way.

The night had an extra special feel to it as the team honored four seniors before the game: Nick Beckman, Tom Champlin, Benjamin Borchelt and Nolan Wolfe. With the win, these young men and the rest of the team will play at least two more weeks of soccer.

Freshman Spencer Smith put King's ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute when he received a pass from Edvin Loefgren beat a defender at the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot that found the back of the net. King's outshot the Panthers 5-1 in the first half but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The Lions would go ahead 2-0 about fifteen minutes into the second half when Loefgren launched a rocket from 30 yards out that glanced the bottom of the crossbar before hitting the netting. Anton Soerlin made it 3-0 at the 75 minute mark when he stripped the ball from the Albany defender and scored an unassisted goal.

The defense was strong throughout the game led by junior goalkeeper Craig Wishart as the King's defenders limited Albany to just five shots for the game and two corner kicks.

The score would stand as the final whistle blew and King's finally clinched their playoff spot. The celebration won't last long though as the Lions will begin preparing for the semifinals of the HVIAC playoffs on Saturday October 27. Their opponent is still to be determined.
