The Lions Drop Season Opener to Carlow University

The Lions Drop Season Opener to Carlow University

New Kensington, PA- The Lions welcomed Carlow University to the athletic center Friday night for a non-conference showdown to start the season.

It was a highly contested contest throughout with the Lions trailing by one going into the half, 28-27. Both teams stifled each other defensively, holding one another to less than 35% shooting from the field before intermission.

Things opened up in the second half, as Carlow got hot from the field (54%) and were able to pull away late down the stretch on their way to handing the Lions their first loss on the season, 65-56. The Lions had trouble finishing all night, ending the night shooting only 36% from the field. New Kensington did have success from beyond the arc throughout, finishing 7-21 from range.

Sophomore Shyheim Flanagan (Breaux Bridge, LA) led New Kensington with 12 points, while Sophomore Benjamin Cunningham (Woodbridge, VA) finished with 11 points in only 17 minutes of playing time. The Lions bench outscored Carlow's, 23-16, led by freshmen Donovan Johnson's (Houston, TX) 9 points in relief.

The Lions will look to get into the win column this Wednesday, November 9th at 6:00 PM as they welcome Butler County Community College for another non-conference contest.
