The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team suffered a rare loss Saturday evening, falling to the Shock of Washington Adventist by a score of 2-1 in a Match that took place in Takoma Park, Maryland. With the loss, the Knights had their three-match winning streak snapped, falling to 9-5-1 on the year. Washington Adventist improved to 8-2 with the victory.
All of the scoring in this one came in the first half. The Shock got on the board in the 10th minute when Francisco Villanueva found the back of the net (unassisted) at 9:54 to give Washington Adventist a 1-0 edge. The Shock catapulted its lead to 2-0 when Bonilla Inmer scored off a gorgeous pass from Fohnatti Nagbe at 27:09. Berkeley College was able to slice Washington Adventist's lead in half when Damaniek Brevett scored (from Marcos Hidalgo) to make it 2-1 at 32:30. That would be the final goal of the opening session.
In the second half, a total of only eight shots were registered. Washington Adventist accounted for five, with the Knights mustering just three. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half, as the Shock held on for a 2-1 victory.
Knights goalkeeper Robert Parker made five saves despite allowing the two goals. Shock netminder Shawn McGuire stopped three shots and allowed just one goal in picking up the victory.
Berkeley College will return to action on Tuesday, as the Knights will battle the defending USCAA Division II National men's soccer champions, the Penn State Brandywine Nittany Lions. The match will take place at Ramapo College, with a start-time of 3:00pm. Prior to the match, the Berkeley College Department of Athletics will honor seniors Tiago DaCosta, Wolfgang Whalen, Gennaro Vittorioso, Arturo Layza, Jose Sosa, Tiago Afonso, and Jordan Bailey.
