Pottersville, NY – CMCC Men's Soccer completed a sweep of its weekend road trip to New York with a 2-0 victory over Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday. Jeremiah Gomez and Mikel Soto scored for the Mustangs to keep the team undefeated in YSCC play.
Central Maine was facing a tough task both offensively and defensively going up against the Huskies pair of forward Joseph Mathews, who leads the conference in goals, and goalkeeper Raphael Cournoyer, who is battling for the most saves in the YSCC.
CMCC battered WOLBI in the first half, carving out plenty of chances and putting 10 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Soto and Mitch Cameron were both denied in the 15th minute on a pair of back-to-back leaping saves by Cournoyer to keep things scoreless. The Mustangs continued to pile bodies forward and enjoyed plenty of possession in the Huskies half.
Gomez provided the breakthrough in the 18th minute. Matty Waters fed a through ball down the left-hand channel for the attacking midfielder to run onto. Gomez's first touch chopped the ball back towards the middle of the penalty area, and his second smashed a low shot into the bottom corner. It was Thornton Academy product's sixth goal of the season and third of the weekend.
Mathews nearly evened things up just two minutes later from a corner kick, but the big 6'6" forward saw his header saved by Cody Cleaveland. That proved to be the best chance of the half, and the visitors went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Head coach Dalton Wing chose to play a more reserved game in the second half with his team looking to keep its lead rather than going in search of more goals and risking allowing a chance on the counterattack.
In the 63rd minute Soto pounced on a turnover in midfield. The Madrid, Spain native curled a shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner past a diving Cournoyer. It was Soto's fifth tally of the campaign. That would be the final shot of the game, as the Mustangs kept possession and held the Huskies at bay over the final half hour to see out the 2-0 win.
CMCC improves to 11-1-1 overall and remains at the top of the conference standings with a 7-0-0 mark. It was the fifth straight shutout for the Mustangs who continue their four-game road trip to close out the regular season with a trip to South Portland to face rivals SMCC on Thursday, October 17th.
