Berkeley rallies from 2-1 deficit to defeat Penn State Mont Alto 5-2

The Berkeley College men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three, and stayed unbeaten in September, by defeating the Nittany Lions of Penn State Mont Alto on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 5-2. The match took place in Mont Alto, PA. With the victory, the Knights improved to a mark of 6-1-1 on the 2024 campaign, while Penn State Mont Alto slipped to 1-5.

The Nittany Lions struck first in this one, netting an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of action (4:19) when Wesley Muller slashed a ball home, past Knights netminder Jack Giannini, to give his team a 1-0 edge. Berkeley's Steven Urbes would tie up the match just under seven minutes later (11:10, capitalizing on a beautiful lead pass from veteran Michael Paredes before sending the ball into the back of the net. The hosts regained the advantage in the 37th minute (36:44) when Thomas Oberholzer blasted home Devonte Henry's feed to make it 2-1 Penn State Mont Alto. The Knights knotted the match at 2-all at 38:13 when Paredes netted an unassisted tally. That would be the final goal scored of an action-packed opening session.

Berkeley's Alejandro Mayorga would score what turned out to be the match-winning goal at 52:28. Gabriel Ocaris and Kareem Davis combined for the assist on the pivotal tally, as the Knights took a 3-2 advantage. The score would remain 3-2 in favor of the visitors until Berkeley would net a pair of goals in the 84th minute (Miguel Andrade, from Paredes, 83:08, and Urbes from Hector Castro, 83:37) to go up 5-2 and put the match away.

Despite trailing 1-0 and 2-1 at different junctures of the contest, Berkeley absolutely dominated the opportunities, registering 45 shots on the day, including 19 on-goal. The hosts mustered just six shots, and only four on net. The Knights earned nine corner kick opportunities, while Penn State Mont Alto had zero, and the Nittany Lions were whistled for seven fouls compared to Berkeley's five.

Giannini picked up the victory in net for Berkeley, yielding two goals while making a pair of saves. His counterpart, Penn State Mont Alto's Jawad Malik, allowed five goals while making 14 saves in taking the defeat.

The Knights will look to make it four victories in a row on Saturday, as Berkeley travels to Revere, MA to take on Fisher College. Start-time at Harry Della Russo Stadium is scheduled for 3:30pm.
