Mechanics Use Second Half Surge and Then Hold on for Win Over HACC

The Williamson soccer team upped a 1-0 halftime lead over Harrisburg Area Community College to a 4-0 lead early in the second half before almost imploding.  The Hawks pulled to within 4-3 with 20 minutes left before Williamson was able to add a late goal and come away with a thrilling 5-3 win.  The game was the season opener for both teams.

The teams were evenly matched and both sides had their chance before Gio Karasavas got Williamson on the board at the 23:03 mark of an assist from Brandon Cairy.  That score would remain until halftime.

Whatever Williamson head coach Peter Glowa said to his team at halftime worked in a big way, as Williamson scored three goals in the first 14:31 of the second half to take what many would have thought was a commanding 4-0 lead.  Zachary Bosak scored his first of two goals off an assist from Dylan Beaver at the 43:53 mark.  Brandon Cairy then scored at the 40:38 mark off a feed from Bosak at the 40:38 mark to make it 3-0 before Jonathan Illing capped off the run with a goal at the 32:29 mark off an assist by Harrison Pritt.

At that point it was the Hawks turn to make a run-and boy did they, as the scored three goals in under 12 minutes to put all the pressure in the world on Williamson.  The Williamson defense was able to withstand the charge, while the offense added a late goal by Bosak off an assist by Cairy, and Williamson was able to escape with the win.

"We did some things well, but we have plenty to work on.  The effort was good on a hot night but it was hot for both teams.  We have to learn to not let up at all when we have a lead, but I'm proud of the guys for hanging in there and pulling out the win when they could have folded.  That was a character-building experience for them and again, I'm proud of how they gutted it out," shared Williamson head coach Peter Glowa.

"And give HACC credit.  They didn't fold either!"

Next up for Williamson is a Saturday road game against Penn State Hazelton.  The team then returns home for Tuesday and Thursday home games against USCAA powerhouse Penn State Lehigh Valley and Lehigh Carbon Community College.
