UNIONTOWN, Penn. – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's volleyball team earned an at-large bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Div. 2 National Tournament for the first time in program history. The tournament was held at Penn State University- Fayette with pool play spanning Nov. 7-8.
First-year Meryk Lewellen (Gorham, Maine) would be recognized for her selection as a USCAA First Team All-American. First-year Yana Montell (Gardiner, Maine) was named an Honorable Mention All-American. Anna White (Buxton, Maine), Jordan Bickford (Cumberland, Maine), and Elise Kaplan (Cumberland, Maine) all earned Academic All-American status.
#1 University of Cincinnati Clermont: L, 3-0
The Seawolves fell to the Cougars 3-0, in their first match of pool play Thursday, Nov. 7. The All-American duo of Lewellen and Montell would combine for 12 kills. First year Sophia Davis (Wells, Maine) contributed eight assists and four digs and captain Anna White (Buxton, Maine) add four kills and eight digs.
#4 Penn State University Mont Alto: L, 3-1
Needing a win to advance out of pool play, the Seawolves fell short 3-1 to #4 Penn State University Mont Alto on Friday, Nov. 8. The margin for set losses was five points or less; and the Seawolves put up impressive numbers totaling 56 kills, 50 assists, and nine service aces in the match. Lewellen would collect 16 kills and five digs on the day. White and first year Lillian Andreasen (Gorham, Maine) combined for 20 kills and eighteen digs and Montell racked up 29 assists and three service aces.
The Seawolves wrap up their season at 18-4 overall.
