Lions Drop Florida Games To Sage, Washington & Jefferson

CLERMONT, Fla. – Penn State Brandywine's seventh-inning rally fell short against Sage College, while Washington & Jefferson College pulled away late as the Lions were downed twice at The Spring Games on Saturday evening. Sage posted a 4-2 victory, while Brandywine was defeated 14-4 by W&J.

Game One: Sage 4, Penn State Brandywine 2

The Gators took advantage of two Brandywine errors to plate a pair of runs in the first inning before tacking on two more in the fifth inning.

Brandywine got on the board in the seventh inning as Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) doubled off the wall and scored when Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) reached on an error. Another miscue put two runners in scoring position with one out, but Brandywine was able to push just one more run across, scoring Cherubini on Alexandra Szpindor's (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) groundout.

Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) posted two of Brandywine's five hits, while Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) struck out four in 6.0 innings in the circle.

Game Two: Washington & Jefferson 14, Penn State Brandywine 4

The Presidents scored in six of their seven at-bats, growing a 6-3 lead through three innings, before putting the game away with a five-run seventh inning. W&J recorded 17 hits and took advantage of five Brandywine errors.

The Lions got on the board in the first inning as Szpindor was hit by a pitch and later scored on Landis' base hit. Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) singled in Cherubini and Fabiano crossed home via a W&J error one frame later. Farrell Everett (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) forced a run in by working a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for Brandywine's final tally.

Brandywine (2-3) is back in action Sunday at Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla., against Defiance (10:00 am) and Marian (12:00 pm).
