Women's Basketball Splits Weekend, Men Fall
Paul Smith's, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College men's and women's basketball teams were home this weekend, hosting Vermont Tech on Saturday and the University of Maine Augusta on Sunday. The Lady Bobcats split the weekend with a 54-43 win over the Vermont Tech Knights and a 76-50 loss to the University of Maine Augusta Moose. The men's basketball team lost both games, losing 96-85 to the Knights and 89-88 to the Moose.
The Lady Bobcats shared the wealth on Saturday with three players reaching double figures. Hayleigh Gates (West Winfield, NY) and Holly Bagley (Bloomfield, NY) led the way with 14 points each, while Abbey Bateman (Edmeston, NY) finished with 11. The boards were dominated by 6'1" center Jayla Gray (Smithfield, VA) and Gates who finished with 18 and 17 rebounds, respectively. Gray added five steals, while Gates contributed four takeaways of her own in a very impressive defensive team effort.
On Sunday, the Lady Bobcats were supported offensively by the outside presence of Gates and the inside dominance of Gray. Gates made five 3s on the night, finishing with 23 points and eight rebounds. Gray continued to wreak havoc in the paint, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Bagley had a solid performance, finishing with six points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The men's basketball team looked great offensively over the weekend, but couldn't figure out their defensive systems, giving up an average of 92.5 points per game to the opposition. Elijiah Pratt (Queens, Village, NY) led the way with 28 points. He shot 11/12 from the line and gathered seven rebounds. Anthony Henson (Orlando, FL) finished with 21 points and seven rebounds, while newcomer Howard Turner (Brooklyn, NY) earned his second double-double of the season, dropping 19 points (including four 3-pointers) and adding 13 rebounds.
Henson led the way on Sunday in a tough loss to UMA with 24 points and eight rebounds. Turner had another strong night from behind the arc, connecting on four 3s to finish the night with 18 points and eight rebounds. Pratt found his range as well, sinking five 3s and racking up 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Sayvion Daniel (Roosevelt, NY) came off the bench with great energy and finished with 13 points and eight boards.
The men's and women's basketball teams are back in action this weekend, hosting NHTI on Saturday and Central Maine Community College on Sunday. Start times are 12pm Saturday and 11am Sunday for the women, and 2pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday for the men. All four games will be played at the Saunders Gymnasium.
