Brown Walks Brandywine Off With Sweep

ASTON, Pa. – Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Penn State Brandywine baseball team to a 4-3 victory in game two after the Lions won the opener in a rout, 10-4, as Brandywine swept a conference doubleheader from Penn State Schuylkill on Monday.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 10, Penn State Schuylkill 4

Brandywine's offense put up crooked numbers in the third and sixth innings and three Brandywine pitchers limited Schuylkill to just four hits as the Lions won the opener 10-4.

The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning, but Brandywine struck for four runs on four hits. Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) got the scoring started with an RBI single, while Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) crossed home following a Schuylkill error. Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tacked on a two-run single, scoring Abegg and Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) to up the count to 4-0.

Abegg's two-out single in the fourth added a fifth Brandywine run, pushing across Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades), who doubled and stole third to open the frame; however, Schuylkill answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 5-3.

Brandywine put the game away by adding five more runs in the sixth. Abegg delivered his third run-scoring single of the game, this one plating two runs, and DeGirolamo followed two batters later with a two-RBI single of his own. DeGirolamo crossed home via Toby Skeans' (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.

Abegg tallied three hits and four RBI, while DeGirolamo also drove in four runs and collected two hits to pace the offense. Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner Prendie) recorded two hits and stole four bases.

Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) earned the victory on the mound after limiting Schuylkill to three runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out five over 4.2 innings. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief and Skeans struck out one, while closing out the game in the seventh.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 4, Penn State Schuylkill 3

Brown's two-out single capped a late comeback for the Lions and earned the team a sweep of Monday's doubleheader.

DeGirolamo got the two-out rally in the seventh started with a long double to right-center field. After Webb was intentionally walked, Brown fell behind 0-2 in the count before battling back and lifting a single to center field, scoring pinch-runner Jesse Davis (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) with the game's winning run.

Brandywine trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning before getting on the board with a run. Back-to-back walks issued to DeGirolamo and Webb and a Brown single loaded the bases for Oechsle, who scored DeGirolamo with a sacrifice fly.

Two frames later, the Lions knotted the score via a two-out, two-run single from pinch hitter Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Perkiomen Valley). Webb led off the sixth with a double and Brown followed with a base hit. Three batters later, the Lions had two runners in scoring position for Shade, who sent a two-strike single through the middle, tying the count at 3-3.

Brown recorded the first three-hit game of his career and swiped a base, while Baughman and Abegg both tallied two hits.

Jaylen Bryant (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications) earned the win on the mound, his fourth of the season. Bryant entered the game in relief during the third inning and limited Schuylkill to just three hits the rest of the way. He did not allow a run, while striking out four batters over 4.2 innings.

Brandywine (18-10, 9-3 PSUAC) is back at home Wednesday for a 3:00 PM game against Clarks Summit.
