Softball Defeats Penn State Mont Alto in USCAA Tournament Matchup

DUBOIS, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill defeated PSUAC opponent Penn State Mont Alto in an elimination contest at the USCAA Softball National Tournament, 6-5.

Mont Alto was the first team to get on the board as singles on back-to-back plays ultimately drove in two runs at the bottom of the 2nd inning. Schuylkill quickly responded at the top of the third as Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) singled through the right side, driving in an Emily Maher (Orwigsburg, PA / Blue Mountain) run. Schuylkill continued to roll as a single by Cealinn McGroarty New (Boston, PA / Mahanoy) loaded the bases for Schuylkill. A Sac Fly by Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley) gave Schuylkill their second run of the contest.

With Stokes occupying third base, Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) singled through the right side, giving Schuylkill a 3-2 advantage. A single by Mont Alto at the bottom of the third tied the game at 3-3.

Following consecutive singles by Stokes and McGroarty at the top of the fourth, Carl doubled to right field and drove in two runs for Schuylkill. An error and a single to right field ultimately lead to two Mont Alto runs and tied the game at 5-5 going into the 6th inning.

As Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) occupied third base at the top of the 6th inning, McGroarty doubled to left center, giving Schuylkill a 6-5 advantage. Schuylkill went on to defeat Mont Alto in seven.

McGroarty went 3-4 at bat and tallied an RBI. Carl tallied 3 RBIs in the victory. Walshaw went the distance on the mound, winning her matchup.
