Baseball Sweeps Penn State Scranton

DUNMORE, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill swept Penn State Scranton in the first meeting this season between the two teams, defeating Scranton 10-5 in the first game and winning 7-5 in the second matchup.                               

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 10, Penn State Scranton 5

Doubles by Ethan Naftzinger (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) and Owen Zimmerman (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) led to two early runs at the top of the 1st inning. A single by Owen Kosar (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley) on the next play advanced Zimmerman to third base. Schuylkill continued their hot streak as Patrick Ryan (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville) doubled, leading to runs by Kosar and Zimmerman. A single and double by Evan Kosar (Shenandoah / Shenandoah Valley) and Jacob Sterner (Strausstown, PA / Hamburg), respectfully, gave Schuylkill two additional runs as they ended the top of the first with six total runs.

Scranton began to show signs of fight during the third inning as two consecutive doubles led to their first run of the contest. Two additional runs later in the inning brought Scranton within three. Three consecutive singles by O. Kosar, Ryan, and Shoop during the 5th inning gave Schuylkill their first run since the opening frame. Scranton quickly answered as a single at the bottom of the 5th inning led to a run, bringing their deficit to 7-4 heading into the sixth.

Schuylkill hit the ball a total of three times during the 6th inning which ultimately led to three runs. Scranton responded at the bottom of the frame with a run. Both defenses were able to prevent the opposite team from scoring during the 7th inning as Schuylkill went on to defeat Scranton.

Ryan went 3-4 at bat and tallied 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Jake Leininger (Pine Grove, PA / Pine Grove) also tallied 3 hits in the victory. Ryan Culbert (Pine Grove, PA / Pine Grove) won his matchup on the mound as he struck out nine pitchers in the process.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 7, Penn State Scranton 5

Schuylkill ended the 1st inning up 1-0 due to an error. Errors by Schuylkill at the bottom of the first lead to three Scranton scores. A double by Chase Herb (Hegins, PA / Tri-Valley) at the top of the second brought Schuylkill within one going into the third.

Both teams scored a run each on a passed ball during the 3rd inning. With Schuylkill facing two outs at the top of the 5th inning, Herb homered, tying the game at 4-4. A single hit plays later by Owen Zimmerman (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) gave Schuylkill a 5-4 lead, their first since leading 1-0 to begin the contest. Scranton quickly responded as a single at the bottom of the 4th tied the game at 5 apiece.

A Sac fly by Sterner at the top of the 7th inning gave Schuylkill two additional runs, extending their lead to 7-5. Schuylkills defense was able to limit Scranton during the 7th as Zimmerman struck out two Scranton players. Scrantons final out came as a result of a ground ball.

Herb finished with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Naftzinger tallied two hits in the victory.

What's Next:

Schuylkill (14-8 overall, 9-5 PSUAC) will take on Scranton once again this Sunday in what will be their Senior Day. The first pitch will be at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. contest at Hamburg Area High School.
