Softball Splits with Penn State Fayette on Senior Day

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - Seniors Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School), Emily Maher (Orwigsburg, PA / Blue Mountain), Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue), and Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) were honored during Softball's doubleheader matchup against PSUAC opponent Penn State Fayette this Sunday for Senior Day.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 5, Penn State Fayette 4

Following a double and single hit at the top of the 1st inning, Fayette stole home base to take a 1-0 lead early in the contest.

A single hit by Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) was followed by a double by Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain) at the bottom of the 4th inning. With Walshaw occupying third base, McConnell flew out to centerfield, driving in Schuylkill's first run of the contest.

A single at the top of the 5th inning with bases loaded gave Fayette a 2-1 advantage. A sac fly on the very next play extended their lead to 3-1. Fayette continued to attack as the game progressed as a double at the top of the 7th inning led to their fourth run of the contest.

With McConnell occupying third base at the bottom of the seventh, Stokes singled, bringing Schuylkill within two. A Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy) single on the next play drove in a Goggin run. Stokes perfected the trifecta as a passed ball gave Schuylkill their third consecutive score, tying the contest and sending the game into an 8th inning. A Youst single at the bottom of the 8th gave Schuylkill their fifth run of the contest as they went on to defeat Fayette in eight.

Youst and McGroarty tallied 2 hits and an RBI each for Schuylkill. Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) finished with two hits while Stokes and McConnell added RBIs.

Game Two: Penn State Fayette 3, Penn State Schuylkill 1

Fayette got out to a 2-0 lead during the top of the 4th inning as two singles and a stolen base ultimately led to 2 runs. A single and a double at the top of the 5th inning extended the Fayette lead to 3-0.

A home run by Walshaw at the bottom of the 6th inning gave Schuylkill their lone run of the contest. Fayette went on to close out Schuylkill in seven.

Walshaw finished with 2 hits (1 home run). Goggin also added two hits for Schuylkill. Kleckner tallied a double in the loss.

What's Next:

Schuylkill (15-13 overall, 8-6 PSUAC) will head back on the road this Wednesday as they take on NCAA Division III opponent Keystone College in a doubleheader matchup. The first pitch is at 3:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
